I will not be ship Zack with any of the SOLDIER first class trio. Sephiroth, Angeal, Genesis. Zack was thirteen when he joined SOLDIER while all three of the other men were already young adultsin their early twenties.

CANON DIVERGENT. My version of Zack will be canon divergent! His main verse that I will default to is what’s typically called a ‘survival verse’ Though this is not necessarily complacent with the events of the remake. My interpretation of Zack is created from a mixture of personal headcanons, && nitpicked aspects of the different canons that are seen throughout the games. novels && movie. Unless specified during plotting, any thread will be set during my main verse, where Zack is a Merc, trying to make a name for himself in Midgar.
FORMATTING. For Me, the lv of formatting usually depends on my mood / LV of LAZINESS. I tend to always use small text as a base, but the rest depends on my mood. I also have a strong preference for using ICONS. Just because I format && Use icons, that doesn’t mean you have to. You do you! The name Zack is of Hebrew origin and it means The Lord has remembered’ && ‘He laughs. Laughter.’ Whilst the name FAIR has middle english origins, holding the meaning of someone who is ‘handsome’ or ‘beautiful’ alternatively it can also be connected to someone possessing a fair, or good natured temperament.
Nicknames Also known as: Zack the puppy. (It’s disliked and he will be annoyed by most who refer to him as a puppy.)
Place of Birth: Gongaga Village.
Age: 16 - 24 + (He’s just turned 24 by the start of FFvii / FFvii remake) His birthday being on NOVEMBER 27. Making him a Sagittarius. Sagittarius are part of the fire element and are known to be;

Occupation: From the age of thirteen, Zack is an employee of the electric company ShinRa. He’s part of ShinRa’s SOLDIER division && by seventeen he is promoted to FIRST CLASS SOLDIER. He later goes on to CUT ties with ShinRa after being forcibly detained && ~experimented~ on as a result of the cover up of the Nibelheim incident. During this time Zack is a fugitive && later becomes a MERCENARY.

Eye colour: Naturally Zack’s eyes are deep && black, the colour of coal. BUT due to the operations && Mako infusions once entering SOLDIER at the age of 13, Zack’s eyes are now a BRIGHT, unnatural Blue. He’d tell you that they are the colour of the sky, but in reality, they have an unnatural glow that could only be called, MAKO blue.
Height: 5′10 - 6’3 (verse dependent.) At the start of Crisis Core Zack is sixteen && 5’10 (179cm.) In my main verse at the end of Crisis Core && the star of Final fantasy Vii cannon, Zack is twenty-three years old, standing at 6’3 (191cm.) It's during the long Nibelheim mission, that Zack has his final growth spurt.
Body build: Broad-shouldered && built, Zack’s body is toned && his muscles are defined. He is prone to exercising (particularly doing squats.) when stressed && / Or restless. Having been a member of ShinRa’s SOLDIER division, Zack was expected to keep himself at peak physical health. This includes regular exercises / workouts as well as extensive combat training. He also keeps a healthy diet, only indulging in junk food on the rare occurrence.
Wardrobe: Zack’s wardrobe consists of different variations of the standard SOLDIER uniform. No longer a part of SOLDIER, what he wears as a merc shows a similarity to his previous uniform just with Zack’s own added flair. He’s a man of SIMPLICITY when it comes to clothing, && while he aims to distance himself from ShinRa he’s worn the same uniform since childhood. No longer a SOLDIER, The branded SOLDIER belt is discarded, turtle neck sleeveless jumpers are switched for more casual t-shirts.
Hair colour + style: Black,thick && unruly, as a teen Zack wears it, so the bangs frame his face. Zack keeps this hairstyle post Angeal's death && only starts growing it out after escaping from ShinRa.
It’s during those nine months post his escape from Shinra when he’s on the run that Zack begins to grow his hair out. In part due to laziness && lack of opportunity to cut his hair. But also as a FIRST step moving away from his childhood && the abuse he suffered at ShinRa. Zack is reimagining himself, rebuilding his life && reclaiming his sense of self. It marks the shift from childhood to adulthood.
Scars: Reckless from youth, Zack’s body has always been littered with tiny scars. From scraped knees that weren’t allowed the time to heal, before the boy was off again on the next adventure, to grazes && cuts on the soles of his feet.
The most noticeable scars are; a cross shaped scar on his cheek, distinctive enough for people to recognize him from it. With time it begins to fade but it’s still visible under bright lights.
An ugly mattered, roughly healed scar, that spreads from his abdomen to his lower chest. A leftover token from his fight with Sephiroth. It’s made worse with a careless attempt to heal && repair the damage by Hojo’s team.
Zack’s upper chest is marked by scattered slashes leftover from sword clashes.Hidden by his hair, he has a faint scar from when he cracked his skull during his fight with Sephiroth.He’s got the remnants of burns suffered after an encounter with Angeal.While shoulder blades are marked by bullet wounds obtained during their escape from ShinRa.Fingertips are faintly scared from his time in the ShinRa labs.Being the idiot that he is, Zack probably has a lot more scars that aren’t related to past violence. For example, Zack has probably nearly knocked himself out on a low beam when he’s not paying attention, needing stitches over his left eyebrow.

Coming from one of a ‘backwater’ reactor village, Zack’s childhood held little to no opportunities. He’s presented with very limited exposure to a narrative outside ShinRa’s control. Zack was a child during the Wutai war, where ShinRa used childrens cartoons && promoted it’s SOLDIERS as idols && heroes to attract more troops to utilize in it’s war efforts. Zack was later one of those children, serving in the Wutai war from the age of thirteen till it’s end three years later.
Zack suffers from minor PTSD && is often seen to be incredibly restless when he has nothing to occupy his mind && / or body with. He counters with exercise (often in the form of squats.) or has been seen to use Angeal’s sword to center him && to keep him from spiraling when his anxiety gets to be too much.
Falling victim to ShinRa’s grooming as a child. His world view has been shaped on ShinRa’s terms. He was molded into a child SOLDIER && while he’s often quite expressive, he struggles during downtime.
While he is vocal about his agitations && annoyance, he internalizes sadness, presenting himself with extra pep in order not to alarm those around him. This also applies to other forms of distress, internalizing it && keeping up a hopeful persona, is how he copes.
When alone, Zack finds himself to be restless && agitated, he is unable to truly deal with everything he’s been exposed to && so he often bottles these emotions away or avoids them completely. This is something others would not expect, as Zack is considered to be an expressive && OPEN individual, he just struggles to balance his own morals with the idealism he’s been led to believe in.

MBTI: ESFP-T The Entertainer: The entertainer is considered to be fun LOVING && outgoing. They often seek an audience or some form of attention. They are people oriented && feel LONELINESS deeply. Entering the SOLDIER program at thirteen, Zack showed both the physical skills && mental resilience to withstand Jenova’s will. Exposure to high levels of Mako can cause the person to suffer from severe Mako poisoning, which can lead to death. Whilst the parasitic nature of Jenova’s cells injected can cause the person to lose their minds.
The first tasks a successful applicant is given, is simply to SURVIVE. This cuts the pool of the successful applicants && those who end up entering the SOLDIER ranks. Zack was one of the few who survived.
As a member of SOLDIER Zack has been trained in hand to hand combat, && it’s preferred form of combat when the stakes aren’t serious. Zack has an aversion to killing when it’s not necessary, he prefers to knock out his opponents when possible, only using the BUSTER sword when the seriousness of the situation demands it. Zack often equipts the weapon, so that he’s fighting with the blunt side, knocking out human foes as opposed to killing them. Zack has been trained in swordsmanship, he uses his enhanced speed && strength to utilize the large blade to a devastating finish.
Due to the enhancements of Mako energy mixed with the Jenova cell’s Zack has enhanced Speed, physical strength stamina && senses. He’s also undergone training to help him regulate this strength making him able to control himself && not accidentally harm civilians.

V. MAIN. ANYTHING FOR MONEY:
FFVII && Remake complacent.
Having had the last 4 years of his life stolen from him, Zack is both weary && restless to return home. The experiments he’s endured these last few years have taken their toll on both mind && body yet now branded a fugitive with ShinRa troops in pursuit. Zack survives the battle against every odd, && precedes to begin to create a life for himself undercover in the slums as a MERC. Zack builds a life for himself in Midgars slums, often taking on monster fighting jobs, && anything else that needs doing. When times are particularly hard, Zack has entered into underground fights in order to make ends meet. Zack joins Cloud, offering him his support during the events of vii && the remake.

V. SO FULL OF LIFE:
Crisis Core complicent.
Growing up in the rural mountain village of Gongaga, Zack’s early years were heavily influenced by pro ShinRa war propaganda. With little opportunities, the boy dreamed of one day becoming a H E R O like the famed Sephiroth. With Heroism as his goal the boy ran away from home at 13, joining ShinRa’s SOLDIER division. Surviving the mako && Jenova cell infusion that potential SOLDIERS have to go through, Zack is granted the rank of SOLDIER 3rd rank. This verse is HEADCANON based, following his journey through the game CRISIS CORE. Zack quickly climbs up the SOLDIER Ranks, eventually realizing that becoming a SOLDIER 1st class might not necessarily make him a HERO. Feeling himself getting dragged deeper && deeper into ShinRa’s dark secrets, Zack is faced with the realization that maybe the idealism's he’s built his life upon clashes with his own morals. Still so young, still so hopeful Zack starts to feel trapped longing for freedom && for a chance to LIVE and become a HERO on his own terms.

Having survived the unthinkable, Zack has to face probably the most frightening thing of all, life. Repairing the relationship between himself && his parents, Zack settles near his friends, still making money as a merc who performs odd jobs. With peace && the shadow of death gone from their lives long enough to FINALLY breath, Zack has settled into domestic life with Aerith.

Gun downed && left for dead, the Turks are successful in their mission && are able to save Zack && return him back to ShinRa. Once more in ShinRa’s hands, the Turks try to convince Zack to join their ranks && once more serve the organisation that betrayed him. Refusing, Zack is imprisoned till he can be trusted to once more honour the vows he took when he joined SOLDIER. Or until they can decide what’s to be done with the EX SOLDIER.

Barely escaping from the battlefield with his life, Zack returns unable to find Cloud. He settles in Midgar still torn by guilt & grief, it’s only during a job for AVALANCHE does Zack run into a new enemy SOLDIER operative, tasked with bringing the fugitive Zack Fair in. The New SOLDIER is Cloud, confused && brainwashed by Shinra tasked to hunt down his former friends..

Modern au.
Never knowing the meaning of slow, Zack had always lived life to the fullest, feeling constrained by the slow pace Gongaga village life, once of age Zack moved to the city. His mother was mortified, not because her baby boy had gone so far away, more that he had dedicated his life to speed, making it his life goal to one day make it as a motobike racer && becoming a reknown champion of the MotoGP. The condition to his move was that he also attended university, his mothers small hope that maybe just maybe he’d settle down into a safe && secure life.

An ELITE warrior of the empire, Zack was groomed from childhood for combat, his speed, strength && stamina having been enhanced by magical experiments, Zack is a deadly force on the battlefield. Since childhood, Zack has aspired to become a hero, for the longest time he thought this dream could be fulfilled by fighting for the empire && bringing peace && unity to the continent. The older he gets, the more suffering he see’s && he’s begun to question his place in this war, that maybe, just maybe he should have been fighting for the other side the whole time.

With death as a constant, young Zack dreamed of one day being strong enough to protect people, to save them...to become a hero. Joining the Crusaders at the age of thirteen, Zack sharpened his battling experiences, doing everything to face up to sin. By 16 he left, joining his mentor and friend, becoming a guardian to the great Sephiroth. Due to his young age, Zack was left behind by his mentor && the summoner, only to find out later that Sephiroth had vanished && Angeal had died. Confused && angry, Zack has become disillusioned with the system. However that doesn’t diminish his hope’s of finding the truth whilst starting his own journey to heroism && defeating Sin, permanently.

Born in a rural Village in Japan, even as a child Zack always had one dream engraved upon his heart. Zack wanted to be a hero. Influenced by videos of heroism around the world, he wanted to be good, to be someone who would be remembered, just like Captain America. Foolish hopefulness seemed to be a constant, coupled with a knack of recklessness, the boy had a talent for worrying his parents. Influenced by a company called ShinRa, Zack ran away from home at the age of 13. Once in ShinRa’s hands, he was given a fabricated strain of the Super Soldier serum. With only a ⅓ survival rate, the boy's strong sense of self pushed him through surprising everyone.
For the next few years he was trained to be a member of SOLDIER, a secret covert military unit loyal to Shinra often loaned out to the government. They used the world's fascination with heros to groom and influence young children, committing them to the program. For years Zack gave everything to Shinra,always believing that they were a force of good. After all, Zack had abandoned his whole life in the hopes of becoming a HERO. During a recon mission, little by little he became aware of the dark secrets hidden within Shinra. Kidnapping, human experimentation && mass killings to cover up wrong doings. Zack was disgusted, he was disgusted in the part he played. During this mission, in an attempt to protect a village from a fellow SOLDIER who had lost his mind, Zack was badly wounded. Saved by Shinra, he was forcibly detained and experimented on for 4 years, until he was finally able to break free from their labs. Escaping with another prisoner, Zack was able to keep his head down and make it to NY. Here he’s attempting to start his life anew. Technically more experiment than a naturally born hero, Zack is determined to right his wrongs && regain his sense of self && agency. He’s become a hero for hire, a mercenary with a conscience.

V. AU. THEY WILL SING MY NAME:
A SONG OF ICE && FIRE
Originating from a small jungle village at the foot of one of the mountains in Leng, Zakkusu grew up running barefoot through jungles, constant laughter pulled fell from his lips. Curiosity governed each of his actions, pushing him forward, acting && forgoing any caution. As a small child, Zack was taken in by the tales of foreign knight filled with honour, in both tales && songs they were renown for their valiantry && kindness. Protecting the vulnerable && saving maidens, these knights were heroes in his eyes. Head filled with stories, a young Zack fell in love with the idea of being a H E R O, a knight, noble && kind. He wanted to be remembered as someone who was considered to be the very best, stronger, kinder than any other, wanted to live a life worth remembering. Running away, all that was left was a small note addressed to his parents. Head full of hopes && dreams, still a boy, Zack boarded a trading ship, working in turn for his passage across the seas. He was going to be a knight, a hero worth remembering.
In Westeros, Zack despite showing incredible skill && promise, a lack of connections, leads him to live the life of a sellsword. Incredibly light on his feet with quite a powerful blow leads him to quite the adversary in battle. Still, despite this setback he holds onto his hopes && dreams, planning to maybe achieving his dreams if he works hard enough && is able to somehow prove his valour in battle.

V. AU. STAND YOUR GROUND, THE DAWN WILL COME:
DRAGON AGE.
Race: Human.
Class: two handed warrior, EX Templar, CHAMPION.
Birthdate: Born during the Autumn of the year 9:09 Dragon.
He spends four years imprisoned in The Aeonar. Escaping during the chaos that the BLIGHT brings, && finally making his way to hide among the refugees in Kirkwall’s darktown by the time he’s twenty-four.
During the events of Inquisition Zack is thirty-three.
Place of Birth: Gongaga Village. Gongaga is a small backwater farming village in the free marches. It’s both sparse in population && in Opportunities. While Zack loves his family && his home, he also feels trapped by his future prospects as a farm boy.
An active && ambitious boy from childhood, Gongaga possesses nothing to cultivate the young boy's dream of becoming a HERO, soon enough making him feel strangled && longing for freedom.
Gongaga is home to one small chantary, && while Zack has never been interested in religion. Always having struggled with a lack of concentration. The chantry did cultivate his views on Heroes. From a young age, Zack believed that to become a Templar, was to become a hero.
Occupation: Abandoning the Templar order, Zack is considered a fugitive. He survives by selling his skillset as a MERCENARY.

Free marches born && proud, Zack Fair came from a backwater village at the edge of the Gongaga mountains. Brave, bold && foolishly hopeful, the boy sped through life, never taking a pause to second guess himself, he moved from action to action, following his dreams of becoming a HERO. The confined village offreded little to no opportunities for those who possessed both ambition && an adventurous soul. Trapped by the prospects of an uneventful life, as a child Zack couldn’t imagine a fate more terrible. To live && die on the same plot of farmland where he was born, never stepping out of his corner of the world, could there be a fate more bleak than one unremembered? He wanted Glory, he wanted action && most of all he wanted to protect those in need. With his heart set on a life of heroics, youthful mind soaked up all the stories offered to him at the local Chantary. Tales of valor, of the brave heroics of the Templar order, && the youthful heart was swayed.
With a heavy heart, the child ran away from the safety of his home, traveling to the nearest city where he was determined to prove himself. He would become a templar && he’d become a hero. Despite the clear lack of enthusiasm for the Chantary’s religious teachings, the knight commander recognised Zack’s genuine ability, the rest could be taught with time. Admitted Into the Templar order, Zack’s determination && hard work pushed him through his classes with ease, till he was ready to undergo the vigil at the record braking young age of eighteen.
Sent to the circle of the city of Midgar, there he worked under the Knight-Commander Angeal. Midgar’s circle was one that boasted strong cooperation && trust between the mages && Templars. This was in part due to the bond between it’s Knight Commander && the First enchanter Sephiroth. && for a time things were peaceful, much to the young boy's dismay, longing for excitement, for a life of heroics, he found the peaceful everyday life of the much akin to the dull life he had led back home. More boy than man, the reckless youth longed for excitement, he longed for action.
Soon enough tha action came, the circle was shaken when the idolised knight Commander abandoned the order, escaping with both mages && Templars alike. The Chantry was disorot, hoping to cover up the embarrassing turn or events before word got out && was set as an example for other Circles, Zack was sent out on a team of Templars to bring both the mages && the rogue Templars in. Despite his skill && ability when it came time to fight, face to face with the man he once regarded as a Mentor, the boy froze, a smile on his face, he refused to raise his weapon. Struck down && left for dead, Zack was && secretly healed by an Apostate half elf living in the Alianage of Midgar, Aerith a flower peddler.
Their relationship was one of half promises, of teenagers finding a safe space around each other to act their age, whilst ignoring the burdens of the adult world thrust upon them. It didn’t matter how much he might have wanted to stay, duty always called && Zack each time left with a promise of another date, or a promise of a next time, Next time they’d build a flower cart for her business, next time they’d sell the flowers together, next time they’d spend more time together.

-Ex Knight Commander Angeal died by Zacks hands. It was an accident on Zack’s part, but it was intentional on Angels. Too ashamed of his actions as a Tempar, but also ashamed of tarnishing his oaths && duty, Angeal chose death, giving Zack his sword burdening the eighteen year old to carry on the legacy of honour && pride.
-Rumors of abnormalities in the neighboring village, Zack is part of a group who are to accompany the first enchanter to investigate the matter for the circle. What they find there, is a rather powerful demon preying on the village. When presented with the choice of freedom && power, Sephiroth allows himself to be consumed by the demon, burning the village before Anyone was able to stop him. Zack tries && fails to stop him, a young recruit named Cloud is able to kill Sephiroth, before both are detained by the chantary.
-Embarrassed && weary of further desertions, The chantry proceeds to cover up the incidents, Zack && Cloud are handled as collateral damage, thrown into the Aeonar in the hopes of being able to cover up the mass incompetence && signs of corruption that had started to submerge.
-Zack, who had already been questioning his place in the order, spends four years incarcerated before he’s able to escape with a lyrium addicted Cloud.
-They are able to escape when the Blight broke out.
-On the run, Zack is determined to save Cloud, find a way to ease his friends suffering && somehow survive. He knows he’s wanted by the Chantary && with everything that’s happened in the past years, decides to hide out in Kirkwalls darktown till he’s able to come up with a better plan. (Part of him longs for home, or to see the flower girl he hasn’t seen in five years.)
-Zack now works as a Merc in Darktown, he’s a double handed warrior who's trying to keep himself && his friend alive.
-During the events of Inquisition Zack presents himself to the organisation offering his skilled aid for a price. It’s only after Haven falls, does he commit in earnest, no longer caring so much about payment.
